FINDING LOST TREASURES

Hundreds of billions of dollars in assets have been misplaced in the United States. This money is being held by the federal government, state government, insurance companies and banks.

It's not surprising considering the way people move around the country, change their names, change their jobs, forget to send in change of address forms and fall prey to a failing memory as the years go by.

Add to that the frenzied pace of company mergers and corporate name changes and you have a recipe for lost treasure.

Fortunately, it's getting easier to track down lost assets. A good starting point is the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators. You can go to their Web site (www.unclaimed.org). Also check out the lists put out by states on their Internet sites.
